El cine, ese espejo a veces roto, otras veces pulido con nostalgia, ha seguido construyendo mitologías para la era del algoritmo. A mitad de este siglo incierto, The New York Times convocó a más de 500 cineastas, críticos y artistas para elegir las 100 películas más significativas del siglo XXI. El resultado no es solo una lista: es una cartografía emocional de lo que nos obsesionó, nos dolió y nos hizo sentir algo real en un mundo saturado de pantallas.
En la cima, Parásitos de Bong Joon-ho, una fábula moderna que disecciona las entrañas de la desigualdad con la precisión de un bisturí coreano. Le sigue Mulholland Drive, donde Lynch convierte el deseo y el duelo en un acertijo eterno. Están también las texturas sensoriales de In the Mood for Love, la violencia contenida de There Will Be Blood, y el grito de identidad de Moonlight.
Pero esta lista no solo es para cinéfilos devotos. Es también para quien alguna vez salió del cine con el pecho apretado, para quien se enamoró de alguien a través de la pantalla o reconoció su infancia en una escena cualquiera. Es para quienes entendieron el amor gracias a Her, o la pérdida a través de Roma.
Latinoamérica no está ausente. Y tu mamá también —esa carretera mexicana llena de erotismo, clase y desencanto— aparece entre las más votadas. También Roma, un poema monocromo que recuerda que lo íntimo también es político.
Estas películas no son "las mejores" solo por técnica o taquilla. Son las que resonaron, las que dejaron cicatrices o sembraron preguntas. Las que desafían la linealidad, como Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; las que se sumergen en lo incómodo, como Get Out o The Zone of Interest. Las que imaginan futuros, como Children of Men, o que reinterpretan el pasado, como Oppenheimer.
La lista —inevitablemente polémica— es también un retrato colectivo de nuestro tiempo: un siglo donde la verdad se fragmenta, el yo se disuelve, y el arte aún tiene el poder de estremecer.
Quizás lo más hermoso de este ejercicio no sea la jerarquía, sino el recordatorio de que el cine sigue vivo. Que aún hay historias que vale la pena contar —y mirar con los ojos abiertos y el alma encendida—.
