Hace un par de semanas, la revista Pitchfork publicó su lista de los 50 mejores discos de ambient de toda la historia. La lista generó una serie de reacciones, la más interesante fue la del músico Rafael Anton Irisarri, quien compiló su lista de los 100 mejores discos que no aparecieron en la lista de Pitchfork. La lista de Pitchfork, más allá de incluir a infaltables clásicos como los álbumes más reconocidos de Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Terry Riley, The Orb y otros de los grandes referentes del género, nos parece un tanto débil. En términos generales es mejor la lista de Irisarri, pero como es obvio siempre van a existir ausencias llamativas según las predilecciones particulares. Si uno toma en cuenta la totalidad de los discos presentados en este artículo, notará que sin duda el ambient ofrece una de las muestras más ricas y estimulantes de la música de las últimas décadas, comprable con cualquier género, música de alta calidad que además conecta emocional y psíquicamente con los escuchas, algo así como música clásica actualizada para nuestros tiempos.
Algunas omisiones notables (en ambas listas) son las siguientes:
Future Sound of London, que ciertamente tiene varios álbumes que pueden considerarse ambient y su Lifeforms seguramente está entre uno de los más influyentes de la historia del género.
No se entiende la omisión de Bill Laswell, quien debería de tener varios discos en la lista, por ejemplo Axiom Ambient- Lost in the Translation, Hear No Evil o alguna de sus múltiples colaboraciones con Pete Namlook o la rara colaboración con John Zorn y el escritor David Chaim Smith en The Dream Membrane, una inclasificable obra de poesía mística, jazz y dark ambient.
El recientemente fallecido Susumu Yokota es otro artista que podría tener varios discos en un top 100. Entre ellos Sakura, Dreamer, Mother, Grinning Cat o su colaboración con Rothko, Distant Sounds of Summer.
Un álbum que tendría que estar indudablemente es el melancólico álbum doble Before the Day Breaks / After the Night Falls, de Robin Guthrie y Harold Budd.
El prolífico Klaus Schulze, (quien tiene obra como para varias menciones en una lista así); Boards of Canada (una banda que quizás no fue incluida por no clasificarse como ambient pero que ciertamente tiene momentos de ambient, mucho más que por ejemplo Slowdive y varias otras bandas incluidas en esta lista); Tangerine Dream, Casino vs Japan, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields, Ricardo Donoso, Deru, Ulrich Schnauss, Porn Sword Tobacco, Jon Hopkins, entre otros artistas que tienen discos dignos de aparecer entre los 100 mejores de la historia del ambient. La lista podría seguir pero esperamos que las ausencias sean llenadas en los comentarios.
